This week with the days getting longer and the cold weather starting to break, I’ve been thinking about all the things that need to be done around the house. Have you ever noticed after the winter months your house looks like it’s taken a beating? From the hardwood floor boards separating to the gunk that has accumulated on the outside of your house, the spring is a great time to get caught up on all the cleaning and home maintenance. My Spring Cleaning Checklist is a great place to start to keep you on track, room by room to get your home ready to enjoy this summer.
I can remember as a child my Nana would have me on my hands and knees wiping down baseboards and doors and then polishing china. As a kid I thought it felt like corporal punishment but of course as a homeowner now I can appreciate all the things she instilled in me then. Thanks Nana! You never notice how much dust and such accumulates around the house until it’s time to clean. Being able to open the windows and let the fresh air in while cleaning the baseboards and window sills is something I’m actually looking forward to this year. With the kiddos around and not having as much time to dedicate to home maintenance and cleaning, I knew I had to make a checklist. And, I’m not usually a person that can easily stay on task. Having a checklist is the best way to make sure every item gets attention and keeps you on task.
Before we get into the checklist, I’m going to share a few pics of the current state of my house. It’s a wreck! And honestly, most times we live in a complete state of chaos. I mean, who doesn’t, right? A few things I’m reminding myself before getting started and that I want to remind you is to take your time. Don’t feel like you have to get it all done in a day. The mess wasn’t created in a day. You can take your list and break it down by day, dedicating an hour or two so it feels more manageable.
Did you know that your floor boards contract during the winter and swell during the warmer months? That’s why your floors are creakier and your hardwoods may look like they’re running for the hills. You also may have noticed your baseboards could use a caulk refresh as well. Your home goes through a lot during the winter. But it’s up to you to stay on top of the maintenance once the warmer months hit. Our baseboards look like they’ve never seen a caulk gun EVER so I’m planning to do a ton of retouching in the next few weeks. Crazy enough, things didn’t look like this before the winter hit. The spring cleaning checklist also has a few maintenance reminders (even items that may require a pro) so you don’t get overwhelmed by all the bigger items around your house.
