Hi! I’m Nicole and I believe your home should evoke a feeling of joy, peace, tranquility and love…
He had just walked in from work and judging by the look on his face, it looked like he had a LONG day. We had moved into our first home together just two months prior with Jaden, our first child and the walls and rooms were bare. I spent 90% of my time coming up with cupcake ideas and developing recipes for my impending cupcake shop. I was literally one step away from the perfect vanilla cake recipe, when just a few words from my husband, Jerome changed the entire direction of my life.
It was that same day that he uttered the words, “can I talk to you?” followed by, “I know you are really into this cupcake thing, but can you take a break just to fix up the place a little? Like putting some pictures on the walls and buying some furniture so that this feels like home…” And that was it. I had been so consumed with the thought of opening a cupcake shop with my mom, which by the way was not a passion just something I thought was a good idea, that I completely neglected not only my family but our very first home that we prayed for and worked hard to get.
I decided to give the cupcakes a break for a moment and focus on making our house feel more like a home. I really had no idea where to start but once I opened my eyes and my heart, I began to look at those walls totally different. I would find pieces of paper, sometimes the back of mail and begin sketching ideas for the bare walls. One day while my uncle was visiting, who happens to be an architect, stumbled on one of my sketches. He literally said, “I think you need to stop baking and develop this skill.” Coming from someone that I looked up to and admired his work, I was completely shocked. He said I had a natural gift and became invested in seeing me explore it. So he helped me find a class at a local design school to explore the basics of Interior Design.
After the first day of class I was hooked! I found myself anxious each week to make it to class… I would get there early to explore projects of the student’s at the college and to just soak up the atmosphere. At the end of the six week non credit class I was dying for more. I then enrolled in an online Interior Design course at NYIAD to educate myself on the foundations of Interior Design.
That was four years ago and my life has changed dramatically. We moved from Nashville TN to a small town in South Jersey and have since had our second son. Before moving, I fell in love with the idea of making home something special for my family (and now yours) and never looked back. Design has become my life. With the nature of Jerome’s job, there’s always a possibility that we will have to move, but that also will not stop me from creating a home that we love.
In late 2016, I decided to start my home decor blog, Home on Poplar Creek to share projects Jerome and I were doing around our home. The more enthralled I became with Interior Design, the more projects I came up with. Money was tight and resources were limited so in order to make those visions on the backs of envelopes come to life, we had to learn to DIY. I began sharing those projects on the blog as I learned about the design industry. Two years later, I decided to start my design business, Poplar Creek Interiors, where I help families like you make their home into something special.
I’m a firm believer that everyone deserves a special place to call home, no matter your budget or design style. I often times hear people say they’re waiting to buy that perfect piece of furniture until the kids get older or they feel limited in what they can do because they have little ones. AND I sometimes hear people say they don’t want to decorate because they’re in a rental. Although there are several things to consider with kids, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful home. With two very rambunctious boys, I have vowed we will not sacrifice style. I’ve learned how to approach beautiful design in a kid friendly way and I’m ready to help you and your family.
Come say hello and let’s chat about your design woes!
I love to team up with other bloggers and brands that share my passions and values. If you think we’re a good fit or just want to connect, go ahead and reach out…I can’t wait to meet you!
