Brie… either you love it or you hate it. I’ve happened to grow a love for it recently and can’t seem to get enough. This weekend I decided to give baked brie a try. My super easy baked Brie with Cranberry Onion Jam was soooo delicious and would be perfect for your next holiday get together.
This dish is pretty impressive on it’s own, or you could really impress your guests by creating a beautiful cheese board, making this the center stage like this one here at The Endless Meal. I’ve also taken a stab at creating a brunch inspired charcuterie board and would love to give a cheese board a try.
WHAT IS BRIE?
Brie is a soft-ripened cheese made from cow’s milk with an edible rind. It has a nutty flavor with subtle tones of mushroom. It’s texture is creamy in the center and slightly runny, depending on the brand.
HOW DO YOU MAKE BAKED BRIE?
Baked Brie is extremely easy to make. You can bake it on it’s own or throw it in a bread bowl like I did which creates an edible vessel that your guests can break into and eat. It only takes about 15 minutes to bake your brie, creating a warm gooey center.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH BAKED BRIE?
Baked Brie can be very versatile. You can go sweet and top it with honey or jams and serve it with crackers and/or sliced apples. Or, you can go savory and top it with caramelized onions, cured meats, crackers, toasted bread, etc. I met somewhere in the middle with mine and created a sweet savory topping and served it alongside toasted bread made from the inside of the bread bowl and crackers.
Baked Brie with Cranberry Onion Jam
For the Cranberry Onion Jam
- 1 white onion thinly sliced
- 1 cup fresh cranberries
- 2 tbsp butter
- 5 tbsp brown sugar
For the Baked Brie
- 1 entertaining size brie about 16 ounce round
- 1 french boule (round french bread)
- olive oil for drizzle
- salt and pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Melt butter over medium heat in a medium pan. Add onions, stirring until soft, about 2-4 mintues.
- Add brown sugar and mix until well until brown sugar has dissolved.
- Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Allow onions to cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- While the onions cook, cut the top off the french boule and hollow out the center. Stuff the brie inside.
- Tear the cut top into bite sized pieces. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Bake for 15 min.
- While the brie bakes, add cranberries to onions, mix and cover. Allow to cook for about 5 minutes, or until the cranberries start to pop open. Remove from heat.
- Remove brie from oven. Pour onions and cranberries on top of brie. Arrange on a cutting board or serving dish of your choice. Serve with toasted bread, crackers or fruit.
