The other day I was browsing through a Target catalog and stumbled on the cutest Wood Bead ad Tassel Garland. I knew right away that I had to have one! But with the testosterone that runs rapid through my house, I knew the pinks, purples and yellows would have been a little too girly. So, I decided to make my own inspired by the Threshold Tassel Garland at Target using blue, green and white yarn.
This Tassel Garland was easy and quick to recreate and just a few dollars because I had most of the materials on hand. Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
DIY WOOD BEAD AND TASSEL GARLAND
First, start by wrapping your yarn around your hard surface. This could be a piece of cardboard, your cell phone or anything wide. I used a piece of wood floor sample I had laying around. My blue and green yarn was thicker than the white so I wrapped it around 20 times while I wrapped the white 40.
Once you get to the last wrap, cut your yarn at least the width of your surface. (Excuse the lack of manicure here.)
Carefully slide the yarn off the hard surface while keeping the loop you created in tact. Then using the excess yarn at the end, wrap it around the top of the yarn at lease 2-3 times.
Cut the opposite end of the loop and tie a know using your excess piece of yarn and a piece of yarn that you’ve just cut. I made a total of 9 tassels, 3 of each color.
Wrap tape around the end of your jute or twine. This will make it easier to string through your beads and keep your jute from unraveling. Then begin stringing your beads. I strung 26 small beads before stringing my tassels.
Then I decided on my tassel pattern. I alternated 2 large beads while alternating colors. When you begin threading your tassels, it’s best to switch to your needle which will make it easier to thread through the yarn.
Lastly, finish threading the remainder of your small wood beads. I chose to create loops at both ends of my garland to make it easier to hang. This is completely optional. You can end your garland by simply tying knots at both ends.
I hope you enjoy this project as much as I did. These playful garlands are great for any kids room or playroom. Or challenge yourself to incorporate this look into your decor. Whatever it is, have fun!
