Either you love it or you hate it… No matter how you feel about it, it’s evident that social media isn’t going anywhere. It has become our way of life. From the way we stay connected with distant family and friends to the connections we make with people we’ve never even met in real life. Social media has its good… but it can be really really bad. Let me explain.
I can remember a time where being on social media actually felt good. Platforms like Instagram wasn’t overly saturated with everyone trying to make it. Fast forward to years later of Instagram’s inception and it’s like being on a crowded Hollywood street riddled with people desperate to make it. Desperate for a chance to be discovered and become the next big thing.

Everyone Wants to Make It
Aside from the world of influencing, the streets of Instagram is noisy. From coaches (life coaches, empowerment coaches, business coaches, you name it), social media marketers, and business owners all hoping to grab just 10 seconds of your attention. Have you ever walked the Las Vegas Boulevard? Where there are club promoters literally everywhere throwing cards into your hands? It’s annoying, right? Well that’s what these Instagram streets are starting to feel like.
In a world filled with so much noise and chatter, it’s hard to stay focused. If someone isn’t selling you something, they’re telling you that you need more followers to make it and that you’re not working hard enough. And don’t get me started on motherhood and just life in general. Social media can have you feeling like your life sucks, your house is busted and that what you bring to this world isn’t good enough. I’ll get into those other two another day. But for now, we’re going to talk about you and your purpose.

You’re Sharing, But Is Anyone Listening?
It seems like I have had the same reoccurring conversation with so many of my friends (myself included, because yes; I often have to talk myself off the ledge too). The conversation always starts the same. We’re all pouring our hearts out into our purpose, sharing our talents and our voice with the world via social media to only be met with crickets. We’ve watched others build strong audiences sharing similar messaging. But for some reason, we just can’t get past certain social media milestones.
And that little voice inside that you’ve had to hush time after time just so you could show up starts to get louder. That voice, along with those Las Vegas Boulevard style business coaches and social media marketers are starting to make you feel like you should just pack it up now because you’re never going to make it. Well sis, it’s time for a reminder that everything you put out there is good enough!

While some may tell you you’re not posting enough reels and that’s why you’re not growing, there’s someone else out there motivated by your tenacity to keep going even though the numbers don’t always fall in your favor. While some may tell you you’re not showing up enough, there’s someone out there that sees you’re juggling the world right now but they are inspired by your drive to share when you can. Do you see where I’m going with this?
Is Social Media Really Killing Your Purpose?
Social media may be killing your purpose because you constantly want to give up. The noise tells you you are failing. And while I’m not telling you not to strive to grow and always be better, I’m telling you to forget what the numbers look like right now and keep showing up. Because there is always someone watching and being motivated by how you move.
When I had this conversation with a friend earlier in the week, she reminded me of the parable about the shepherd that left his 99 sheep to find his lost one. While the 99 sheep are important to the shepherd, he goes out to find the one lost sheep because he knows how important the sheep is. So, how does this relate to 2021 and social media? Well, often times we are so caught up in the numbers. We care more about our follower count that we lose sight of the individual people that take time to show up for us day in and day out.

Social media tells us, the more followers you have the more credible you are and the more important you are. But whether you have 100,000 followers or 100, it’s important to remember as long as you are walking in your purpose and impacting AT LEAST ONE, you are serving your purpose!
You Are Unique, And That Is Your Gift to the World
The way you speak, craft, cook, design or decorate is unique to you. The way you share will resonate with at least one person. And you just may be the ONE thing standing between them walking in their purpose because of the way you show up. You are motivating someone sis. Don’t ever forget that. One day you’ll look back at your humble beginnings and be proud that you didn’t give up on your purpose. But for now, keep serving and keep showing up because there is someone out there assigned to your name that is being pushed out of their own self doubt and fear because of how you show up.
Until next time,
