I LOVE throw pillows. Like LOOOVVVEEEE. They’re one of the easiest and quickest ways to change the look and feel of a room or take it from season to season. But, like most home decor out there, I know the options are endless and it can be overwhelming. But have you ever wondered how to mix and match pillows like a pro? You know the feeling you get when you walk into the pillow aisle of Homegoods and you literally want all the pillows but walk out empty handed because you don’t know where to start. Well, I’m here to help you navigate through those pillow aisles like a boss.
Start With a Pattern
The pattern of your pillow will be the leading lady. Depending on the direction, size and color will determine the feel of your pillow combination. Think of patterns in two categories; large scale and small scale. Scale is considered the size of the pattern on the fabric. Here’s an example of both:
Add in Some Lines
What do I mean about adding in lines? Adding stripes or a geometric pattern will bring a little balance to your pattern. No matter how bold your print, soft lines can tone the whole look down and work as an accent to your pattern.
Bring in Some Solids
A solid pillow serves as an accent and is a good way to add in a pop of color if you choose.
Round it Out with Texture
Texture can definitely make a big statement in a subtle way. It can be in the form of fur, tassels or leather. Adding texture can bring a ton of warmth to your combination and round out the entire look.
Now Put it All Together
Now that you feel comfortable mixing and matching throw pillows, let’s put it all together!
Putting together a look that you love takes a little practice but I hope that these tips help you feel more confident when you walk into stores like Homegoods.
Until next time,
