I can’t believe I’m back again for another round of The One Room Challenge. I think at this point I’m a bit addicted. If you’re new here, last year I participated in the Spring and Fall challenge and loved every minute of it. If you’re new to the One Room Challenge, then you are in for a treat!

First, I want to give a HUGE thank you to Linda Weinstein at Calling it Home and Better Homes and Garden for continuing to host the One Room Challenge. ORC is a six week design event where extremely talented designers are challenged to design or complete one room in six weeks. One of the best things about ORC, is that they provide a platform for guest participants (bloggers, influencers and the like) to join alongside and redesign a space as well. You can learn more about ORC here.

WEEK ONE // THE SPACE
Over the past year, Jaden has expressed how much he wanted me to design his room. He’s watched us paint and spruce up other spaces and was feeling a little left out. I have always wanted to do something extra special for him. If you know Jaden, you know he’s like a middle aged man trapped in a 6 year old’s body. He’s extremely mature for his age and is beyond his years. I’ve always wanted his room to reflect that… a place that is still kid friendly but also connects with who he is on the inside. If “chill” were a person, he’d definitely be it!

He enjoys kicking back and watching movies, coloring, and playing video games. So his new room will reflect that and give him a place to do all those things.
While there’s nothing “wrong” with his room, I do feel its lacking for his personality.

THE PLAN
One thing that has been pretty consistent in my ORC participation is that I usually change the plan somewhere about halfway through. Sometimes product availability changes from the time I create my plan or once I start putting the pieces in place I have a change of heart. While I’m pretty set on where Jaden’s room is going, I know things could change somewhere.

If you know anything about me, you know I LOVE blue. And of course Jaden’s room is no exception. His room may be the biggest explosion of blue ever. And I’m ok with that! For his room, I’m looking to layer on the pattern and texture for a really playful look. I can’t wait to see it all pulled together.
The boys tend to gravitate to Jaden’s room so comfort and warmness is the goal. I think this design achieves that.
A VIRTUAL TOUR

My favorite part of Jaden’s new room is the ceiling. I’ve changed the design on this room several times but I’m finally feeling good about where it is. It’s warm and cozy just like I planned and the ceiling gives a fun surprise. It’s also classic. We’re not daring when it comes to trying really bold colors but I love the idea of using a classic color like navy and adding in so many textures with the color.

I’ll be doing cornices over the window to compliment the checkered ceiling. I’m also planning to swap out the closet doors for wood bypass barn doors. The light fixture will be getting update and I’ll also DIY some wall shelves and paint them red to break up the blue.

INSPIRATION
Every project starts with inspiration. And this is no different. I usually hop on Pinterest before starting any project and save whatever inspires me. It may be the colors of a photo, the feeling it gives me or the style. Whatever it is, if you’re starting a new project, start collecting photos for inspiration. Here’s what inspired me for Jaden’s room:

Next week, I plan to have the room painted and hopefully the wallpaper up. Be sure to come back next week and don’t forget to check out what the other One Room Challenge featured designers and guests are up to!
